Democracy and the Role of Journalism

DESCRIPTION

This conversation will bring together diverse experts to surface concrete, specific, and innovative initiatives that lead to new kinds of media coverage and reporting of elections that strengthen democracy, rather than despair.

This discussion will aim to answer how philanthropy can support alternative models of journalism, what projects can counter the negative influences of commercial broadcast journalism, how we can scale local and community alternative models of journalism, and, beyond elections, how to support journalism and other forms of democracy in our communities.

Looking at how democratic life is covered, we aim to answer the following questions:

1. How can philanthropy support alternative models of journalism (including solutions journalism, participatory and community-centered journalism, and equity-focused journalism) at the national level and targeting commercial media?

2. What new projects need to be created to counter the negative influences of commercial broadcast journalism on elections at the national level and targeting commercial media?

3. How can we scale alternative models of journalism already in place at the local and community level to the national level and targeting commercial media?

4. Looking beyond elections, how can we support journalism about other forms of democratic life in our communities?
